  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Courtney -- Grim & Dark -- Yet Worthy : I enjoy this author's work. However, her subject matter chronicles the grim side of life. I felt incredibly sorry for Jeanie & Julius - 51 year old twins who are left adrift after their mother dies suddenly. Neither are prepared to navigate the world without her. Set in rural England, this tale is sad. Layers of deceit and decades old secrets are uncovered. Fuller's writing, as ever, is incredibly skilled and draws you in. I felt sympathetic for the main characters, even the dog, Maude, was a fully fleshed character, who plucked at my heartstrings. . A rather dark book, but extremely satisfying. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Stephanie Glidewell. -- The Ground Finally Does Settle : II nearly abandoned this book due to its depressing content. I carried on because I know a bit about RH. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from JD -- Unrelenting bummer : I’m really struggling with how I feel about this book, because it is so well written. But, ok, I just gotta say it-this work is unremittingly bleak. I couldn’t escape the suffocating feeling of stress and doom that hung over the entire plot construction. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rose -- On the dark side : Claire Fuller is an excellent writer, I have read all her books. They do seem to be on the dark side though. I always get sucked into the characters. I liked Unsettled Ground because the characters are very real, I felt like I was right there with them feeling their pain & misery. Not for everybody. If you are someone who likes happy feel good books, I wouldn't recommend this book. If you love good writing, read this. I loved the dog! I gave 5 stars for the writing. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from WINTHROP SMITH -- The book of why. : Admittedly, I read it backwards after chapter 13, the why's having created a wave determined to drown a brother and sister who, at 51, have discovered that nothing is as it seemed, nothing ever was as it seemed, and the only person who could answer why any of this is true can't reply. Thankfully, the cottage has a productive garden. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Bristol Book Blogger 📚📖📓 -- Not a thriller : This book is written well, as always by this author, and the story did hold my interest, but it's not a thriller! Why do publishers continually feel the need to mis-market books? Just because a crime occurs somewhere in a novel it does not make it a thriller. You need a lot more than that. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Miss D. Sloan -- Disappointing, dull and depressing. : After reading Claire Fuller's previous three books, and loving all of them equally, I was really looking forward to getting stuck into this one over my Easter break. Unfortunately, though, I was deeply disappointed in this book. It was dull and depressing, with none of Fuller's characteristic writing flair. I would never have known she was the author if it hadn't been for her name on the cover. The only reason why I finished it was because I'd bought it and even then it was a struggle. If I had borrowed it from the library, I'd have returned it unfinished. The only light in this otherwise dull and depressing book was the fact that I was intrigued by the main character because she reminded me of someone I know. Could do better! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from PJ -- Claire Fuller never ceases to amaze me! : I have been waiting with anticipation for the latest offering from Claire Fuller. In fact, my excitement and strange apprehension about, whether this book could possibly live up to my previous enjoyment of reading Claire's books, left me hovering over the purchase button for several days! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sarah C -- Intriguing and bittersweet. : Loved this. The twin characters are so well written that although you can't imagine their lives, you can feel the cold in the cottage, their sense of hopelessness when they are left alone on their mother's death, and their innocence about the world... They have lived such sheltered lives that it's hard to think of them as 51. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dr sarah skinner -- A tender gut wrenching novel about poverty and family : This is a fantastic book and for me is the 50th book I’ve read this year .it has been longlisted for the woman’s prize 2021 ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 25, 2021 )
