Blue Plastic Cow: One Woman’s Search for Her Birth Mother Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from AC Too -- Heartbreaking, but also uplifting : This is an adopted daughter's search for the mom she never knew. She tried so hard, for so long, and ultimately found her mom, but it was too late. Still, she met extended family, along with some half-siblings. My cousins are all adopted, so these stories are always interesting. Well written, although I found myself skipping over some overly detailed passages that would interest family members, but not the general public. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Blue PlasticCow : Great read. Shows how unmarried women were treated and the secrets and lies told by many who thought they were right. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sheila Pierce -- Outstanding book : Thank you Barbara for an outstanding review of life in Widnes during the late 40's 50's and our time in the 60's and beyond. Really special book about the generation before ours and how they treated the tragedy of life events with hidden truths and lies. Twists and turns all the way until the very end. I read this book quicker than any other book I have read, just didn't want to put it down. I was curious about the Title but it's explained in the book. Great read. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Yvonne Taylor -- A gripping story : I was moved to tears several times during my reading of the Blue Plastic Cow. The brutal manner Barbara finds out about being adopted shook her world and increased her uneasy feelings of difference and unworthiness. The first half of her book explores her conflicting emotions about herself, her adoptive mother Florrie, and is overshadowed by Barbara's longing to know the story of her birth mother Carole. Running alongside this section is a vivid picture of her family's life in a northern town taking in Barbara's teenage adventures in Liverpool and the Cavern Club - a trip down memory lane for similarly aged readers but also social history for younger readers. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pablo -- Love & anguish in a superbly written book. : The authors adoption and search for her natural mother has haunted and somewhat dominated her life for decades and you can't help but feel she's come close to a total mental breakdown at times. The deep love between her and her husband, Derick is perhaps the only thing that kept her sanity intact. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 22, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Christine Tyler -- A moving story of a life time’s search. : The first part of Barbara Attwood’s story is told through the eyes of a child growing up with the realisation that she is different. Written in the third person, the gradual development of a young woman who doesn’t fit in with her family easily is realistic and grips the reader’s interest. Once she moves into the first person, however, in the second part of her tale, the pace increases and it becomes difficult to put down. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 24, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from BB -- The book is part detective story, a slice of 60's England and has many twists and turns. : From the start the reader is immersed into a heartwarming story of family love, heartache and loss. We span the decades following the author's determined search for answers to mysteries in her own life. Whilst doing so we get a slice of post war life in England with highlights during the 1960's, the Cavern and the Beatles, we are part of the audience in the Cavern. A fascinating roller coaster ride to the ultimate truth. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 22, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from rachel gaskin -- Would highly recommend this book. What an amazing journey to go on. Well worth a read. : I bought this book for my mum as she is born and bred in widnes. This book has lots of memories of the past to reflect on and great flashbacks too. Memories of the Queens hall and many more places. My mum has thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it - defo worth a read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 30, 2021 )
